KIGALI, RWANDA – In a leap towards improving healthcare access, the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK) has launched a USSD-based appointment booking system, a move that is poised to revolutionize the patient experience across Rwanda. By dialing *722# and following the prompts, patients can now conveniently book their appointments from the comfort of their homes.
This innovative system is particularly beneficial for CHUK, the foremost public hospital in Rwanda, which handles a high volume of patients daily. According to recent statistics, CHUK receives over 1,000 patients each day, many of whom often endure long waits and the frustration of discovering that their required specialists are unavailable for weeks or even months.

The introduction of this USSD system is expected to drastically reduce these inefficiencies. By allowing patients to book appointments remotely, it not only saves them the time and cost of traveling to the hospital but also ensures they can secure timely consultations with the necessary healthcare providers. For instance, patients under the Rwandan Universal Insurance Scheme, Mituel de Santé, will particularly benefit from this streamlined process.
Jean-Marie, a frequent patient at CHUK, expressed his relief at this development: "Last year, I spent several hours traveling to CHUK only to find out that I had to wait a month to see a specialist. This new system will save us so much time and money. It's a huge relief."
As CHUK pioneers this initiative, there is a call for provincial, district, and health centers to embrace this technology and assist patients in booking their appointments before transferring them to CHUK. This collective effort can significantly enhance the overall healthcare delivery system in Rwanda.
One physician at a district hospital who talked to Rwanda Health Magazine highlighted the potential impact: "If all health centers adopt this system, we can ensure that patients are seen promptly, reducing the backlog and improving healthcare outcomes. It’s a win-win for everyone involved."
Many patients are optimistic about the changes this system will bring. Aline Mukamana, another CHUK patient, shared her thoughts: "Booking an appointment from my phone means I can better plan my visits and avoid unnecessary trips. It's a great improvement for our healthcare system."
This initiative not only marks a milestone for CHUK but also sets a precedent for other public hospitals in Rwanda. If successfully implemented across the board, it could significantly enhance patient satisfaction and healthcare efficiency nationwide.
As Rwanda continues to modernize its healthcare infrastructure, the adoption of such technologies represents a forward-thinking approach to patient care, ultimately striving to ensure that every Rwandan has access to timely and quality health services.
